Smart Home Automation Success Story: Preventing Garage Door Collisions

Hi everyone, I wanted to share a really cool project I recently completed in my home. It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but this one has me pretty excited. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to prevent my family from accidentally smashing the garage door into our kids’ drawer every time we come in. Let me walk you through how I solved this problem using some basic smart home components.

The issue was that our kids often left the drawer open in the mudroom, and when we’d come in through the garage door, it would inevitably get caught. It was frustrating and potentially dangerous, especially with the dogs and kids running around. I stumbled upon a post in the community that inspired me to try something similar using a contact sensor. I thought, why not take it a step further and make it more noticeable?

Here’s what I did: I installed a simple contact sensor on the drawer. I paired it with a smart plug and some spare electrical components I had lying around. Whenever the drawer is left open, the sensor triggers the smart plug, which in turn activates a very obvious indicator light in the garage. It’s a small LED light that’s bright enough to catch our attention immediately as we approach the door.

The setup was surprisingly straightforward. I used a contact sensor from [Brand X], a smart plug from [Brand Y], and a basic LED light strip. The automation rule was simple: if the drawer is open, turn on the light. I programmed this using the built-in automation tool in my hub. It’s been working flawlessly for the past few weeks, and I’ve already had a couple of instances where the light saved us from potential damage.

I’m really happy with how this turned out. It’s a great example of how even simple smart home solutions can make a big difference in daily life. Plus, it was a fun project that didn’t break the bank. I’d love to hear if anyone else has tackled similar problems or has suggestions for improving this setup further.

Thanks to everyone in the community for the inspiration and support. Happy automating!
