Smart Home Heating Automation and Integration Insights

After years of experimenting with various smart home technologies, I’ve finally nailed down a heating automation setup that’s both efficient and user-friendly. I’d love to share my journey and some tips that might help others looking to integrate their heating systems with smart home tech.

Starting with my VeraLite, I’ve been using it alongside an EVL-3 module to manage my Honeywell Vista 20P alarm system. While I’ve managed to get the alarm status displayed on my openHAB sitemap, arming and disarming it has been a bit of a puzzle. I’ve seen solutions for DSC systems but nothing specifically for Honeywell, so I’ve been relying on Vera for Z-Wave functions. Upgrading to VeraProtect might be the next step, but I’m waiting for more reviews to feel confident.

One of the most satisfying integrations has been with my Shelly devices. I’ve been using Shelly Plus PM and PM Mini units to monitor energy consumption in different rooms. It’s been a revelation to see how much each room uses and adjust accordingly. For those looking to dive deeper, the Shelly Pro EM 50 is worth considering for more precise monitoring.

I’ve also been exploring ways to automate my attic fan. The challenge lies in creating rules that account for both summer and winter conditions. Using sub-rules within a Triggered automation seems to be the way to go, though it requires some trial and error. I’d love to hear how others have tackled similar logic challenges!

When it comes to notifications, I’ve faced the issue of too many alerts from my Nest Hub Max, burying important doorbell notifications. After some digging, I found that adjusting settings within the Nest app helped, but I’m still curious if there’s a more streamlined approach.

For anyone looking to integrate Alexa with custom routines, I’ve found that using virtual switches can be a lifesaver. For example, controlling the flashing lights on my Ring cameras without affecting their floodlights has been a game-changer. It’s all about finding the right balance between automation and manual control.

I’d love to hear your experiences and tips, especially regarding heating automation and system integrations. Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other optimize our smart homes!
