I had an open door policy to use my IR remotes, but I wanted something more elegant. After some research, I settled on using an IR repeater and a Vera controller. It took a bit of trial and error, but I finally got everything synced up. The key was ensuring that both the TV and the AV closet could receive commands from Vera.
