Smart Irrigation System Setup and Battery Life Tips

Hey everyone, I’ve been diving into some exciting projects lately, and I’d love to share my experiences and gather some advice from the community.

Recently, I decided to set up a smart irrigation system for my grandmother’s 1000L water tanks. The goal was to automate the watering process to prevent overflow and save water. I used Shelly Plus 1PM devices to control the pump and installed ultrasonic sensors to monitor the water level. The system is powered by ESP32-C6 Mini Boards, which I chose for their low power consumption and versatility.

Challenges and Questions:

  1. Battery Life: I’m using a 2×AA battery pack to power the ESP32 units. While it works, I’m curious if there are more efficient battery options or if adding a solar panel could extend the lifespan.
  2. Sensor Recommendations: I’m currently using HC-SR04P ultrasonic sensors, but I’m open to suggestions for more reliable, 3.3V waterproof sensors that could improve accuracy.
  3. Temperature Monitoring: As a bonus, I’d like to add a temperature sensor. Would a DS18B20 be suitable, or are there better alternatives?

Tips and Tricks:

  • Waterproof Enclosures: I’ve found that using small, waterproof enclosures for the sensors and electronics is crucial, especially for outdoor setups. It protects the components from moisture and extends their longevity.
  • Solar Power Integration: For future projects, I’m considering adding solar panels to power the ESP32 units. This could be a sustainable solution, especially in areas with consistent sunlight.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences with similar projects. Have you successfully integrated solar power into your setups? What sensors have worked best for you in outdoor environments?
