Smart Lighting and Ring Doorbell Automation Fix

I’ve been working on setting up a smart lighting automation with my Ring Video Doorbell 2 and SmartThings. The goal was to have a light turn on when the doorbell is pressed after sundown. It was working perfectly until I tried to edit it to add another switch. That’s when I ran into an issue where the app couldn’t connect, giving me the error: ‘We’re having trouble connecting. Check your network connection and try again.’

Frustrated, I deleted the automation from the IDE and tried recreating it. This time, when I got to selecting the Ring doorbell button, the screen just showed ‘Lighting Automation’ at the top and ‘Next’ at the bottom. No options for status or time of day. Tapping the automation just brought up the same error message again. It was really confusing—had something changed between SmartThings and Ring?

After some research and reaching out to the community, I found that others were having similar issues. It seems like there might have been a temporary glitch or a compatibility update that caused the problem. To fix it, I had to reset my SmartThings hub and reinstall the Ring integration. Once that was done, I could create the automation without any issues.

Here’s what I learned:

  1. Always check for updates on both the SmartThings and Ring apps before making changes.
  2. If you run into connection issues, resetting the hub can often resolve them.
  3. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the community—someone might have already encountered and solved the same problem.

Now, my doorbell automation is working better than ever, and I’ve even added a few more features like scheduling and voice controls. It’s amazing how a little troubleshooting can lead to such a seamless setup!

If anyone else is having trouble with their automations, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to help troubleshoot or share tips!
