Smart Lighting and Security Integration: My DIY Experience

I recently embarked on a DIY project to integrate my smart lighting system with my security cameras and outdoor lighting. It’s been a fascinating journey, and I’d love to share my experiences and tips with you all.

Starting with the basics, I wanted to ensure that my outdoor lighting would activate only when needed, especially at night. I decided to use a Shelly 1 to control a security light using a 12V PIR sensor. The idea was to have the light turn on when motion is detected, but only after sunset. This way, I wouldn’t be disturbed during the day, but I’d still have the security benefits at night.

To achieve this, I set up a rule where the Shelly 1 activates the light when the PIR sensor detects motion, but only if the sun has set. I also configured my Wyze outdoor camera to send me notifications during the day when motion is detected, even though the light remains off. This setup has been working perfectly, and I feel much more secure knowing that my system is active when I need it most.

One challenge I faced was ensuring that the IR intensity on my Wyze outdoor camera was properly configured. Initially, the night vision was too dark, and I couldn’t distinguish anything. After some research, I realized that adjusting the camera’s position and ensuring it was away from direct light sources made a significant difference. Now, the night vision is much clearer, and I can monitor my property effectively.

Another aspect of my project was integrating my smart lighting system with my openHAB setup. I wanted to ensure that my lights could be controlled both manually and automatically based on predefined scenes. For example, I created a scene that turns on specific lights when I leave the house and another that disables certain notifications when I’m back. This level of customization has made my home smarter and more comfortable.

I’d love to hear from others who have undertaken similar projects. What challenges did you face? What tips can you share for optimizing smart lighting and security systems? Let’s continue this conversation and help each other make our homes smarter and safer!

Happy tinkering! :rocket:
