Smart Lighting Automation for Nighttime Baby Care

As a parent, I’ve always been on the lookout for ways to make my home more comfortable, especially during late-night feedings. My daughter, who is now three months old, often wakes up in the middle of the night, and finding the right balance between lighting and sleep has been a challenge. This is where my journey with HmIP devices began, and I wanted to share my experience in case it can help others.

The Problem

Every time our little one wakes up, I find myself fumbling in the dark to turn on the lights. It’s not just about finding the switch—it’s about ensuring the light isn’t too harsh, so we don’t fully wake her up. Plus, with two of us sharing the responsibility, it’s easy to forget whose turn it is to handle the lights.

The Solution

I decided to automate the lighting in our bedroom and nursery. The goal was to have lights that turn on gently when needed and turn off just as smoothly afterward, without requiring any manual intervention.

The Setup

I chose the HmIP-WRC2 wall-mounted remote control and paired it with HmIP-PS smart plugs. This combination allows me to control multiple lights from a single location. Here’s how I did it:

  1. Placement: I mounted the HmIP-WRC2 on both sides of the bed, ensuring easy access for both me and my partner.
  2. Integration: Connected the HmIP-PS plugs to the existing wall sockets for the nightlights and the floor lamps under the bed.
  3. Automation: Using the Home Assistant app, I set up a routine where pressing the button on either side of the bed turns on the nightlights and floor lamps, creating a soft, warm glow.
  4. Scheduling: I programmed the system to dim the lights after 15 minutes, ensuring we don’t disturb our daughter’s sleep unnecessarily.

The Process

The installation wasn’t without its challenges. I had to carefully disassemble the HmIP-WRC2 to remove the system button, which involved gently prying it out with a small screwdriver. Once that was done, I painted the device to match our bedroom’s aesthetic, using a fine-grit sandpaper to ensure the paint adhered well.

For the HmIP-PS plugs, I installed them in a central location under the bed, where all the necessary cables converge. This made the setup clean and organized, avoiding any unsightly tangles.

The Outcome

The results have been nothing short of amazing. Now, when our daughter wakes up, one gentle press of the button illuminates the room just enough for us to attend to her needs without fully waking her up. The lights dim automatically, creating a soothing environment that helps her drift back to sleep.

This setup has also made nighttime parenting less stressful. It’s one less thing to worry about, allowing us to focus on what truly matters—our little one’s well-being.

Tips for Others

If you’re considering a similar setup, here are a few tips:

  • Plan Your Placement: Think about where you’ll need access to lights the most and place your controls accordingly.
  • Choose the Right Automation: Experiment with different brightness levels and timing to find what works best for your family.
  • Customize Aesthetics: Take the time to paint or otherwise customize your devices to match your home’s decor.

I’m thrilled with how this project turned out and can’t recommend it enough for other parents dealing with nighttime routines. It’s a small change that makes a big difference!

Happy parenting and happy automating! :star2:
