Smart Lighting Automation: Motion Detection and Dimming Tips

I recently set up a smart lighting system in my home and wanted to share my experience and some tips that might help others. My goal was to create a seamless automation where the lights turn on to maximum brightness when motion is detected, especially during dark hours, but return to a dimmed level after a short period to save energy.

Here’s how I approached it:

  1. Motion Detection Setup: I used a PLEG (Presence Light Energy Guide) to detect motion outside. The lights are set to maximum brightness (100%) when motion is detected. If the lights were already on at a lower dim level, they remain unchanged, which is perfect for avoiding unnecessary changes.

  2. Dimming and Timer Automation: The challenge was to have the lights dim back to their original level after 2 minutes. I found that saving the current dim level and recalling it after the timer was key. This required some scripting and automation rules, but it worked perfectly once set up!

  3. Integration with Other Devices: I also integrated this system with my smart hub and Alexa. Now, I can control the lights manually or let the automation handle it. It’s been a great way to balance convenience and energy efficiency.

  4. Tips for Others:

  • Test Thoroughly: Make sure to test different scenarios to ensure the automation works as expected.
  • Adjust Timer Settings: The 2-minute timer can be adjusted based on personal preference or specific needs.
  • Consider Energy Savings: Dimming lights after a short period not only saves energy but also extends bulb life.

I’d love to hear how others have set up their smart lighting systems and any tips or tricks they’ve discovered! :rocket:
