Hey everyone! I wanted to share my recent project with the community and get your thoughts on it. I’ve been working on automating my stair lighting system, and I thought it might be helpful to walk through my setup and some of the challenges I encountered along the way.
The Setup
I have a set of stairs that wrap around a corner, which makes it tricky to ensure proper lighting without causing any false triggers. I decided to install two motion sensors—one at the bottom of the stairs and one at the top. These are connected to a Flux LED light strip that runs the entire length of the stairs. The goal was to have the lights turn on when someone approaches the stairs and turn off once they’ve passed through, ensuring safety without unnecessary energy use.
Challenges and Solutions
Initially, I faced some issues with the sensors detecting motion too frequently or not at all. After some research, I realized that adjusting the sensitivity settings on the motion sensors was key. I also had to experiment with the placement of the sensors to avoid any blind spots or over-detection areas.
Another challenge was getting the LED strip to respond correctly to the motion sensors. I used a simple automation rule in my Home Assistant setup that checks the current state of the lights before making any changes. This ensures that the lights only turn on when needed and don’t interfere with any manual adjustments.
Tips for Others
- Placement is Key: Take the time to test different positions for your motion sensors. Even small adjustments can make a big difference in performance.
- Adjust Sensitivity Settings: Don’t be afraid to tweak the sensitivity settings on your sensors. What works for one environment might not work for another.
- Test and Iterate: Start with a basic setup and gradually add more features as you become comfortable. Testing each component individually before integrating them can save a lot of frustration.
Outcome
I’m really happy with how this project turned out. The stairs are now much safer, especially at night, and the system has proven to be reliable. It’s also been a great learning experience, and I feel more confident tackling similar projects in the future.
If anyone has any questions or suggestions, I’d love to hear them! Also, if you’ve worked on a similar project, I’d love to hear about your experiences and any tips you might have.
