Hey everyone, I’m really excited to share my recent project and see if I can get some tips from the community. I’ve been working on setting up a smart lighting system in my bathroom, and while I’ve made some progress, I’m hitting a bit of a snag that I could use some help with.
So, here’s what I’ve got: I’ve installed a Kasa Wi-Fi switch, a Sengled RGBW light bulb, and a ZooZ motion sensor. All of these are integrated into my smart home ecosystem, and they’re working well individually. The goal is to have the light bulb and switch function normally during the day—meaning the switch controls the light bulb on and off. But at night, specifically between midnight and sunrise, I want the motion sensor to take over and turn the light on in a soft red color (around 30% brightness). This would be perfect for those late-night trips to the bathroom when I don’t want to be blinded by a bright light.
I’ve managed to get the motion sensor to trigger the light at night and set it to red, which is great. However, the issue I’m facing is ensuring that the light switch is left on after midnight so that the bulb has power when the motion sensor detects movement. I’ve tried setting up a timer to turn the switch on at midnight, but I’m struggling to get it to turn off again at sunrise so that the switch can be used normally during the day.
I’ve been tweaking a rule in Rule Machine, but I’m not quite getting it right. I can add screenshots if that would help, but essentially, I’m looking for a way to automate this process so that the switch turns on at midnight, stays on for the motion sensor to work, and then turns off at sunrise without any manual intervention. It’s a bit of a puzzle, but I’m sure there’s a solution out there!
Has anyone tackled something similar? Any advice or suggestions would be incredibly appreciated. I’m really hoping to get this sorted so that my bathroom lighting is both convenient and energy-efficient. Thanks in advance for your help!
