Smart Lighting Automation with Motion Sensors: Seeking Solutions

Hello everyone, I’m thrilled to be part of this amazing community! I’ve recently started exploring the world of smart home automation and I’m eager to share my experiences and learn from others. Today, I’d like to talk about a project I’ve been working on: using motion sensors to control lighting in my home. While I’ve managed to set up the basics, I’m facing a challenge that I need some help with.

So, here’s the setup: I have a motion sensor that I want to use to turn on the lights in my hallway. The idea is that when someone enters the hallway, the lights come on, and after a certain period of inactivity, they turn off automatically. That part I’ve managed to get working using a simple automation. However, I’ve hit a snag that I need to figure out. If someone is still in the hallway when the lights are about to turn off, I want the timer to reset so the lights stay on. But right now, the lights just turn off after the set delay, regardless of whether someone is still there.

I’ve tried adjusting the delay settings, but that just changes how long the lights stay on before turning off, not resetting the timer. I’ve also looked into creating a more complex automation, but I’m not sure how to make the system detect ongoing motion and reset the timer accordingly. I’d really appreciate any tips or advice on how to achieve this. Maybe there’s a specific app or integration that can help, or perhaps a different way to structure the automation rules.

I’ve attached a screenshot of my current automation setup for reference. If anyone has successfully implemented something similar or knows of a workaround, I’d be so grateful for your insights! Let’s brainstorm together and see how we can make this smart lighting system even smarter.

Looking forward to hearing from you all and learning from your experiences. Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,
