Halloween is just around the corner, and I wanted to share a fun project I’ve been working on to automate my home’s lighting using NFC tags and my Sonos system! ![]()

I’ve been experimenting with setting up NFC-triggered automations for seasonal events, and Halloween seemed like the perfect occasion to get creative. My goal was to create a seamless experience where family and friends could enjoy spooky music and lighting effects simply by tapping an NFC tag.
Here’s what I did:
-
NFC Tag Setup: I programmed an NFC tag to trigger a specific automation in my smart home system. When scanned, it activates preset scenes for my RGB lights and plays a Halloween-themed playlist on my Sonos speakers.
-
Lighting Effects: I set up my RGB lights to cycle through eerie colors and pulsing effects, creating an immersive atmosphere without any manual adjustments.
-
Music Automation: The NFC scan also triggers my Sonos system to play a curated playlist of Halloween soundtracks and spooky ambiance tracks. It’s been a hit during our recent gatherings!
While the setup worked perfectly during testing, I noticed that occasionally the NFC scan doesn’t trigger the automation immediately. I’m curious if others have experienced similar delays or if there are best practices for ensuring consistent NFC automation responses. ![]()
If anyone has tips or alternative approaches for making this kind of setup even more reliable, I’d love to hear them! Let’s make this Halloween the most tech-savvy yet! ![]()
