Smart Lighting Automation with Wyze Cam and Plug

I’ve always been fascinated by how smart home technology can enhance our daily lives. Recently, I decided to tackle a project that I’ve been thinking about for a while—automating my shed lighting with motion detection. I wanted to use my Wyze Cam outdoor camera and a Wyze plug to turn the lights on automatically when motion is detected. Here’s how I went about it and what I learned along the way.

First, I needed to ensure that both devices were properly connected to my network. The Wyze Cam was already up and running, but I had to set up the Wyze plug for the first time. I followed the Wyze app instructions to add the plug, and it was pretty straightforward. The app walked me through the setup process, and within a few minutes, the plug was connected.

Next, I had to figure out how to link the camera’s motion detection feature with the plug. I did some research online and found that the Wyze app allows you to set up automation rules using their Scenes feature. I was a bit nervous about getting the settings right, but the interface was user-friendly. I created a new scene where motion detected by the camera triggers the plug to turn on.

Testing the setup was both exciting and a bit nerve-wracking. I stood outside the shed and waited for the camera to detect my movement. To my delight, the lights came on almost instantly! It was a great feeling to see everything work seamlessly. I even tested it at night to ensure it worked in complete darkness, and it did perfectly.

One thing I learned is the importance of placement. I had to adjust the camera’s position a few times to get the best coverage of the shed area. Also, I discovered that the sensitivity settings in the Wyze app were crucial to avoid false triggers, like leaves blowing in the wind.

Overall, this project was a huge success and a fantastic learning experience. It showed me how powerful smart home devices can be when used together. I’m now inspired to explore more automation ideas around my home. If you’re thinking about similar projects, I highly recommend starting small and gradually expanding your setup. The sense of accomplishment is well worth the effort!

Happy automating! :rocket:
