Smart Lighting Integration Success Story: VeraPlus and Minimote Workaround

I’ve always been fascinated by the potential of smart home technology to simplify daily life, even though I’m far from a professional programmer. My journey with smart lighting started with a VeraLite hub, which served me well for several years. However, upgrading to VeraPlus presented some unexpected challenges, particularly with my GE 45600 dimmers. They simply didn’t play nice with the newer firmware, leaving me frustrated and searching for solutions.

After extensive research and experimentation, I stumbled upon a clever workaround using the Minimote. While it only has four buttons, I discovered that I could assign multiple functions to each button by creating scenes in the Vera interface. This breakthrough allowed me to toggle lights on and off, dim them, and even control multiple devices with a single button press.

For example, I programmed one button to toggle my kitchen dimmer when tapped and control the undercounter lighting when held. This simple yet effective solution transformed the Minimote into a versatile control hub, completely eliminating the need for the problematic GE dimmers. The best part? This setup is entirely local, so I don’t rely on any cloud services or external apps.

This experience taught me that sometimes the most elegant solutions come from thinking outside the box. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how a bit of creativity and persistence can turn a frustrating problem into a seamless, functional system. If anyone else is struggling with similar issues, I’d love to hear your stories or help troubleshoot—sharing knowledge is what makes this community so special!

Cheers to the power of smart home innovation, one button press at a time!
