Smart Lighting Retrofit Success Story

I recently undertook a project to replace some CFLs with smart LEDs in the can lights on my front porch. The goal was to modernize the lighting while maintaining the existing setup without major modifications. Here’s my journey and some tips for anyone considering a similar project.

The Challenge

The porch ceiling is finished in stucco, and I wanted to avoid any modifications that would require repairs. I decided to move the inner cans slightly to access the CFL ballasts and disconnect them. This allowed me to wire the new smart LEDs directly to the 120V mains.

Device Search

I’ve been using ZigBee devices in my Home Assistant setup to limit the number of protocols I support. My search for ideal devices led me to explore several options:

  1. Halo Smart Wi-Fi LED Can Lights - These fit perfectly into the existing Halo 5" can lights and offer Wi-Fi integration. They were a great fit for my setup, especially since my Wi-Fi reception on the front porch is spotty.
  2. ZigBee Devices - While I found many options, most were designed for ceiling installations without cans. Many had compatibility issues or didn’t fit the 5" hole.

Backup Plan

As my primary search didn’t yield the desired results, I considered modifying the cans to add a standard E26 light bulb socket. This would allow me to use a wide range of smart light bulbs, but it would require more invasive modifications.

Final Choice

The Halo Smart Wi-Fi LED Can Lights turned out to be the perfect solution. They integrated seamlessly into my Home Assistant system, and the Wi-Fi functionality ensured reliable control despite the outdoor location.

Tips for Others

  • Measure Twice: Ensure your can lights are the correct size before purchasing new bulbs.
  • Check Compatibility: Verify that the devices you choose are compatible with your existing setup and protocols.
  • Plan for Spotty Wi-Fi: If your outdoor Wi-Fi is unreliable, consider using ZigBee devices with a reliable mesh network.

This project was a great success, and I’m excited to expand my smart lighting setup further. If anyone has tips or alternative solutions, I’d love to hear them!
