Hey everyone! I’m really excited to share some of my recent projects and experiences with the community. First off, I’ve been diving into setting up smart lighting around my home, and it’s been a fantastic journey. I’ve managed to integrate several Govee strip lights and some Hue bulbs, creating a seamless lighting system that’s both energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing. It’s been a learning curve, but the results are truly rewarding!
One of the most satisfying parts of this project has been figuring out how to display battery levels as a percentage in Home Assistant. I stumbled upon a clever workaround using template sensors, and I thought I’d share it with you. By creating a custom sensor that pulls data from the device’s battery voltage, I’ve been able to convert that raw data into a user-friendly percentage. It’s a small tweak, but it makes monitoring battery life so much easier!
I’ve also been experimenting with setting up motion-activated lights in my kids’ bedrooms. The idea is to have a button by their beds that turns on the bedroom light, hallway light, and a bathroom light at a low brightness level—just enough to guide them without being too bright. However, I’ve run into a bit of a snag with the button toggling the lights off again. It turns out, if I set the button to toggle the power state, it doesn’t remember the brightness level. I’ve been trying different configurations, but I’m not quite there yet. If anyone has tips or tricks for this setup, I’d love to hear them!
Another thing I’ve been curious about is the integration of smart home appliances like refrigerators and ovens. I came across Home Connect, which seems like a promising platform for connecting these devices to Home Assistant. While I don’t have any of these appliances yet, it’s something I’m keeping an eye on for future upgrades. The potential to automate daily tasks and receive notifications when, say, the washing machine finishes, is pretty exciting!
On a lighter note, I’ve also been exploring ways to make my smart home more interactive and fun. I’ve set up a few scenes that change the lighting and music based on the time of day—perfect for creating a relaxing evening ambiance or a lively morning wake-up call. It’s these little touches that really make a smart home feel like home!
I’d love to hear about your projects and any challenges you’ve overcome. Whether it’s lighting setups, battery monitoring, or integrating new devices, let’s share our experiences and learn from each other. Happy tinkering! ![]()
