Smart Lighting Setup and Control Challenges

I’ve been diving into creating a smart lighting system for my kitchen remodel, and I’ve hit a few bumps along the way. Let me share my journey and some insights I’ve gained, in case it helps others facing similar issues.

The Setup
I decided to go with multi-colored LED strips under my cabinets and multi-colored LED bulbs above the island. For the strips, I chose the controller and LED strip combo, which seemed like a solid choice. However, I’m still undecided on the bulbs for the island. I’ve narrowed it down to a few options but want to make sure they’ll work seamlessly with my existing setup.

The Question
My main concern is whether I can control both the LED strips and bulbs simultaneously using the SmartThings app. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the app’s ability to handle multiple devices, especially when it comes to dimming and color adjustments. If anyone has experience with this, I’d love to hear how you’ve managed it!

Challenges Faced
While setting up my Zigbee devices, I encountered some issues. A few weeks ago, I noticed that I couldn’t add new Zigbee devices anymore. Devices like the IKEA Tradfri and Hue bulbs would start adding but then fail, taking too long to complete. I tried a network reset, but the problem persisted. I checked the Zigbee channel to ensure it wasn’t overlapping with any nearby Wi-Fi networks, but even after switching to channels 16 and 21, the issue remained. It’s frustrating because I know the devices work fine with other platforms like Home Assistant.

A Possible Solution
After some research, I found that others have had success by removing devices individually rather than trying to exclude them all at once. It seems the “Exclude Devices” feature in OpenHAB isn’t as reliable as I hoped. If anyone has tips on how to troubleshoot this or improve the exclusion process, I’d appreciate hearing about it!

Battery Life Concerns
Another thing I’ve noticed is with my contact sensors. I received a kit and managed to add three sensors without any issues, but the fourth one gave me a low battery warning. I had to go through the pairing process two or three times before it finally connected. I’m confused because it’s brand new—shouldn’t the battery life be better? If anyone has advice on how to resolve this or prevent it in the future, please share!

Conclusion
Creating a smart lighting system is a rewarding project, but it definitely comes with its challenges. From device compatibility to network issues, there’s a lot to consider. I’m hopeful that with some adjustments and maybe a few more tweaks, I can get everything working smoothly. If anyone has additional insights or solutions, I’m all ears!

Happy tinkering!
