Smart Lighting Setup and Integration Experience

Hey everyone,

I’ve been diving into the world of smart lighting lately, and I wanted to share my journey and some tips that might help others. My goal was to create a seamless lighting system that integrates with my existing smart home setup. I’ve been using Hubitat as my hub, and I’ve been experimenting with various devices to achieve the perfect balance of functionality and aesthetics.

One of the challenges I faced was finding motorized blackout roller shades that could handle the large windows in my house gym. After some research, I came across Serena Shades, which seemed to tick most of my boxes. They offer 120V motors, which was a must for me since servicing batteries at that height would be a nightmare. I also appreciated the option to connect them to ActionTiles via SmartThings for easy control. While they’re a bit pricey at $1000 per shade, the quality and functionality justify the cost.

Another thing I wanted to mention is my experience with Z-Wave devices. I recently installed some EcoLink door and window sensors and a garage door tilt sensor. They’ve been working great, but I did run into an issue with the tamper alarm tripping during installation. Initially, I thought I’d have to go through the hassle of excluding and re-including the devices, but I found a smarter solution by using advanced Z-Wave commands to reset the tamper status without disrupting the setup. This was a huge time-saver!

I also wanted to touch on the importance of optimizing flows to reduce the load on your hub. I’ve heard from several users that overly complex flows can slow down Homey. To prevent this, I’ve been restructuring my flows to be more efficient. For example, instead of having separate flows for turning lights on and off, I’ve consolidated them into a single flow that checks the current state and acts accordingly. This has made my system more responsive and reliable.

If anyone has tips on integrating different brands or optimizing their smart home setup, I’d love to hear them! It’s always great to learn from the community and see how others are tackling similar challenges.

Cheers,
