After a week of tinkering with my Hubitat setup, I’m thrilled with how much I’ve been able to automate around my home. From my man cave lighting to my projector lift, everything feels so seamless now. But there’s one area I’m still figuring out: the lighting for my basement stairs.
I’ve got a door at the top of the stairs, and initially, I thought using that as a trigger would solve the problem. But then I realized it doesn’t account for people coming back upstairs. That’s when I started thinking about adding a motion sensor at the bottom of the stairs. The idea is that when someone opens the basement door, the lights turn on, and when motion is detected at the bottom, the lights turn off. But I’m not sure if that’s the best approach.
Would it make more sense to use both a door sensor and a motion detector? And how do I ensure the lights don’t turn off if someone is still downstairs? I’ve been considering tying it into an occupancy sensor, but I’m not entirely sure how that would work.
I’d love to hear from others who’ve tackled similar setups. What’s your approach to lighting basement stairs? Any tips or tricks would be appreciated! ![]()
