I’ve been diving into the world of smart lighting to create the perfect home theatre experience, and I wanted to share my journey and some lessons learned. My goal was to integrate a dimmable light fitting with Philips Hue bulbs while ensuring seamless control through my smart home system. Here’s how it unfolded!
Current Setup
I started with a single gang light switch connected to a standard light fitting with three LED bulbs. It was a basic setup, but I wanted to take it to the next level with smart controls.
Desired Outcome
I envisioned a system where I could dim the lights using a physical switch (with a sleek, chrome finish for the WAF) and also control them via my smart home app. Additionally, I wanted to add two Hue GU10 bulbs and two Hue lightstrips for ambiance, all linked to my AV setup. The challenge was ensuring these lights could be turned off when not in use without cutting power to them, as they need to stay powered for quick access.
Exploring Solutions
I considered the MCO Home touch panel 2 gang. It seemed like the perfect fit since it could handle both the existing light fitting and the Hue bulbs. I wondered if I could wire one load to the existing fitting and use the second switch purely as a Z-Wave relay to control the Hue bulbs via WebCore. However, I was unsure if this setup would allow me to dim the Hue bulbs without affecting their constant power supply.
Research and Trials
After some research, I found that using a physical switch or relay that doesn’t cut power but merely toggles the light state was the way to go. This approach ensures the Hue bulbs remain powered but can be turned off when needed. I also explored different dimmer options to find one that blends functionality with aesthetics.
Challenges Faced
One hurdle was ensuring the physical switch and smart controls worked harmoniously. I had to ensure the system recognized both inputs and acted accordingly without conflicts. Additionally, finding the right combination of switches and relays that met my aesthetic and functional requirements was a bit of a puzzle.
Final Thoughts
While I’m still tweaking the setup, the journey has been incredibly rewarding. It’s fascinating to see how technology can enhance everyday experiences, like watching a movie in a perfectly lit home theatre. I’m excited to continue refining this project and explore more smart home integrations in the future. If anyone has tips or experiences to share, I’d love to hear them!
