As I continue to explore the world of smart home technology, I’ve been focusing on how to make my home more accessible for my elderly parent who is blind and my sibling with low vision. It’s been quite the journey, but I’m excited to share some of the solutions I’ve found and the challenges I’ve overcome.
One of the first things I noticed was the importance of consistent and reliable notifications. I wanted a way to ensure that if there was an emergency, like a fall or someone needing help, the entire house would be alerted. I’ve been experimenting with using Alexa to trigger alarms or messages across the house. While I’ve had some success, I’m still looking for a more seamless solution that doesn’t require knowing specific device names or going through multiple steps.
Another area I’ve been focusing on is motion detection. I’ve installed a few motion sensors around the house, particularly in areas where the dog tends to pace at night. The challenge has been finding a sensor that’s reliable and can be temporarily disabled if someone needs to move through the area during the night. I’ve also been looking into outdoor motion detectors for the backyard, but many of the options I’ve found either have poor reviews or aren’t designed for outdoor use.
One of the most exciting discoveries has been the use of smart bulbs and a smart thermostat. These devices have made it easier to create a safer environment, especially during the night. I’ve set up routines where the lights automatically adjust based on motion and time of day, providing just the right amount of light without being too harsh.
I’d love to hear from others who have tackled similar challenges. What devices or solutions have worked well for you in creating an accessible smart home? Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!
