Hi everyone! I wanted to share my experience with setting up a smart lighting system for nighttime monitoring. I have a light strip and a motion sensor, and I’ve been experimenting with creating rules to make my home safer and more energy-efficient.
Initially, I set up a basic rule where the light strip turns on when motion is detected at night. It worked well, but I wanted to add another layer of functionality. My goal was to change the light strip’s color to red when motion is detected, providing a visual alert, and then revert it back once the motion stops.
Here’s what I did:
- Rule Setup: I used the Rule Machine to create a rule that checks for motion detection, the current time (between sunset and sunrise), and the current state of the light strip. If all conditions are met, the light strip changes to red.
- Color Transition: After detecting motion, the rule captures the current color settings of the light strip before changing it to red. This ensures that once the motion stops, the light strip returns to its original color.
- Automation: The rule waits until there’s no more motion detected before reverting the color. This prevents unnecessary color changes and ensures smooth operation.
I tried using some motion lighting apps, but they didn’t quite meet my needs. Instead, the Rule Machine provided the flexibility I required. It’s been working perfectly, and I love how it enhances my home security without compromising on energy efficiency.
If anyone has tips or alternative solutions, I’d love to hear them! Happy automating! ![]()
