Smart Lighting Setup for TV Area

Hi everyone, I recently came across an interesting idea for smart lighting control in the TV area and wanted to share my experience with you. I’ve always been a bit of a tinkerer when it comes to home automation, so when I saw this setup, I decided to give it a try.

The idea is to have the ceiling lights in the TV area automatically adjust their brightness based on whether the TV is on or off. This way, the lights aren’t too harsh when watching TV but brighten up when the TV is turned off. I’ve been using a combination of a Shalk IMR3 current sensor and Homematic HM-SCI-3-FM to achieve this.

Here’s how it works: the current sensor detects when the TV is turned on or off. When the TV is on, the lights dim to 20%, creating a cozy viewing environment. When the TV is off, the lights brighten up to 80%, making the space feel welcoming again. The best part is that this setup works regardless of how the TV is turned on or off—whether it’s via the remote control, the power switch, or even when all the media components are turned off together.

The setup was surprisingly straightforward. The current sensor is connected to the TV’s power supply, and the Homematic controller handles the dimming. The beauty of this system is its invisibility—it’s integrated right into the switchboard, so there’s no bulky equipment sticking out.

I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried something similar or has any tips for improving this setup. It’s been a great addition to my home, and I hope others find it useful too!

Cheers,
Tahonka
