Hello everyone! I wanted to share my recent experience setting up a smart lighting system in my hallway. I’ve been exploring Homey for a while now, and I must say, it’s been an amazing journey. Today, I’d like to talk about how I managed to get my motion and contact sensors working seamlessly to control the hallway lights. First off, my goal was simple: I wanted the lights to turn on when someone enters the hallway and stay on as long as there’s movement or activity. The challenge was ensuring the lights don’t turn off too quickly when someone is still present but not actively moving. I started by setting up a motion sensor and two contact sensors on the doors. The motion sensor was straightforward—I used the built-in timer feature to keep the lights on for a few minutes after the initial trigger. However, the contact sensors presented a different challenge since they don’t have a default wait time like the motion sensor. After some research and trial and error, I discovered that creating a custom automation rule was the solution. I linked the contact sensors to the motion sensor, ensuring that any activation (whether from the motion sensor or the contact sensors) would trigger the lights. To maintain the lights while someone is in the hallway, I adjusted the motion sensor’s timer to a slightly longer duration. The result? Perfect! The lights now turn on when either the motion sensor or contact sensors are triggered and stay on as long as there’s activity. It’s incredibly convenient, especially during late evenings when I don’t want to fumble with switches. For anyone looking to achieve something similar, here are a few tips: - Start Simple: Begin with basic automations and gradually build up complexity. - Experiment with Timers: Adjust the timer settings to match your needs—too short, and the lights might turn off mid-conversation; too long, and you might waste energy. - Combine Sensors: Don’t hesitate to mix different types of sensors to cover all scenarios. This setup has made a world of difference in my daily routine, and I’m excited to explore more possibilities with Homey. If you have any questions or tips, feel free to share—I’m always eager to learn more! Happy automating! ![]()
