Smart Lighting Setup: My Journey with Govee and OpenHAB

Recently, I embarked on a exciting project to transform my living room with smart lighting. I decided to go with Govee LED strips for their vibrant colors and ease of installation. After some research, I chose the Govee H6188 and H6189 models, which offer both RGB and white light options, perfect for creating different ambiance settings.

Installation Process
I started by planning the layout, ensuring the strips would cover the entire room without any gaps. The adhesive pads were a breeze to apply, and I used the hairdryer trick to make the removal process smoother in case I needed to reposition them later. I was impressed by how well the adhesive held without damaging the walls.

Integration with OpenHAB
Next, I integrated the Govee strips with my OpenHAB setup. The process was straightforward using the MQTT protocol. I configured the devices in the OpenHAB Paper UI and set up scenes for different occasions—like a relaxing evening mode with warm whites and a vibrant party mode with colorful RGB settings.

Challenges and Solutions
One challenge I faced was ensuring consistent brightness across all strips. I solved this by calibrating each strip individually and using the OpenHAB rule engine to automate brightness adjustments based on the time of day. For example, the lights dim slightly at sunset and adjust to full brightness when motion is detected.

Tips for Others
If you’re considering a similar setup, here are a few tips:

  • Plan Ahead: Sketch your layout to ensure even coverage.
  • Adhesive Care: Use the hairdryer method for easy pad removal.
  • Automation: Leverage OpenHAB’s rule engine for seamless integration with other smart devices.

This project has been a fantastic way to enhance my home’s atmosphere while learning more about smart home technologies. I’m already brainstorming my next project—maybe adding smart blinds to complement the lighting system!
