Hey everyone!
I’m really excited to share my journey with setting up a smart lighting system in my home. I’ve been wanting to dive into the world of smart home tech for a while now, and I finally took the plunge last month. I thought it would be a breeze, but boy, did I learn a thing or two along the way!
I decided to go with a mix of brands for my setup—Philips Hue for the main areas and some IKEA Tradfri for the bedrooms. The idea was to have a cohesive system that could be controlled from one app. However, getting everything to play nicely together was more of a challenge than I expected. ![]()

One of the first hurdles I faced was getting the IKEA Tradfri to integrate smoothly with my Philips Hue setup. I remember spending hours tweaking the configuration files and trying different apps to bridge the two systems. It was frustrating, but I finally managed to get them working together using a third-party integration. ![]()
Another thing that threw me off was the initial setup of the Philips Hue motion sensors. I thought they would just work out of the box, but I had to go through a detailed process to ensure they were correctly paired with the lights. It was a bit overwhelming, but with some research and trial and error, I got it sorted! ![]()
Now, here’s where I could really use some advice. I noticed that the IKEA Tradfri bulbs aren’t as dimmable as the Philips Hue ones. Does anyone have tips on how to adjust the dimming settings or find bulbs that offer a smoother transition? Also, I’d love to hear how others handle the integration of multiple brands in their setups. Any best practices or tools you’d recommend? ![]()
On the plus side, the system is working beautifully now! I’ve set up some awesome automations, like the lights dimming when I watch TV or turning on gently in the morning. It’s made my mornings so much better! ![]()
I’d love to hear about your experiences with multi-brand setups. Have you faced similar challenges, and how did you overcome them? Drop your thoughts below—I’m all ears! ![]()
