Smart Lighting Setup with Tasmota and Energy Monitoring

I recently embarked on a project to integrate smart lighting into my home using Tasmota, and I wanted to share my experience and some insights for anyone considering a similar setup.

Starting with the basics, I chose Tasmota for its flexibility and the extensive community support available. My goal was to not only automate my lighting but also to monitor energy consumption in real-time. I decided to use a combination of smart bulbs and wall switches, all controlled through a central hub.

One of the challenges I faced was ensuring seamless integration with my existing smart home ecosystem. After some research, I discovered that Tasmota works exceptionally well with MQTT brokers, which made it easier to connect everything. I also installed a Template-Sensor to track energy usage, which has been incredibly helpful in understanding my consumption patterns.

I stumbled upon an issue where the energy sensor wasn’t displaying real-time wattage, only the cumulative kWh. After some troubleshooting and reaching out to the community, I found that adjusting the script and ensuring the correct PIN configuration resolved the problem. It’s been a great learning experience, and I’m now able to monitor both historical and current energy data effortlessly.

For anyone looking to set up a similar system, I’d recommend starting with a small project to get familiar with Tasmota’s capabilities. Investing time in understanding MQTT and the sensor configurations will pay off in the long run. Additionally, leveraging community forums and resources has been invaluable in overcoming hurdles.

Overall, my experience with Tasmota has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s not just about the automation; it’s about gaining insights into how I use energy and making informed decisions to optimize my home’s efficiency. If you’re considering diving into smart lighting or energy monitoring, I highly recommend exploring Tasmota—it’s a powerful tool with endless possibilities.
