Hey everyone! I wanted to share my recent success with setting up custom automation for my new Kwikset 914 smart lock. After some trial and error, I finally got everything working smoothly, and it’s been a game-changer for my daily routine. 
The Goal:
I wanted the lock to automatically lock when someone leaves the house and unlock when someone arrives. This would streamline our morning and evening routines, especially with kids running in and out. Plus, I wanted to avoid relying on third-party apps, so I focused on using the built-in features of my smart home ecosystem. 
The Setup:
- Presence Sensors: I already had phone-based presence sensors set up for each family member. These detect when someone is home or away.
- Lock Automation: Using the custom automation feature in the new app, I created a rule that locks the door when a person’s presence status changes to “away.” Similarly, it unlocks the door when someone’s status changes to “home.”
- Testing: At first, there were a few hiccups, like the lock not responding instantly. But after tweaking the trigger conditions and delay settings, everything started working perfectly!
The Outcome:
Now, my family doesn’t have to worry about manually locking or unlocking the door. It’s all handled automatically based on our presence. This has given me peace of mind and simplified our daily routine. Plus, it’s been a fun way to introduce my kids to the world of smart home technology!
