Smart Mirror Project: Challenges and Solutions

Smart Mirror Project: Challenges and Solutions

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working on a smart mirror project and thought I’d share my journey with you. The goal is to create a sleek, functional mirror that integrates seamlessly with my smart home ecosystem. I’ve moved from Linux to a Windows system for this project, which might seem unusual, but I’ve found it to be much faster for my specific use case.

The Setup

I’ve installed SSH and OpenSSL via Cygwin to maintain some Linux-like functionality. This allows me to connect to my Linux machine remotely, which has been incredibly helpful. However, I’m looking for tools native to Windows that can be launched via Cygwin to control my screen’s power settings. I’ve tried nircmd, but it hasn’t worked as expected. On Linux, I’d use tvservice to manage video settings, but I’m hoping there’s a Windows equivalent that integrates smoothly.

Challenges and Solutions

One of the main challenges has been finding the right tools for screen management. I’ve explored several options, but nothing quite matches the functionality I had on Linux. If anyone has recommendations or solutions, I’d be thrilled to hear them!

Another aspect I’ve been focusing on is integration with my smart devices. I’ve successfully connected a few sensors and actuators, but I’m still working on optimizing the automation rules. For example, I want the mirror to automatically adjust its brightness based on ambient light levels and user activity.

Community Support

This project has been a great learning experience, but it wouldn’t be possible without the support of communities like this one. I’ve found a lot of helpful resources and advice from others who’ve undertaken similar projects. If you’re considering a smart mirror project or have any questions about my setup, feel free to reach out!

Looking Ahead

I’m excited to continue refining this project. My next steps include improving the voice control integration and exploring more advanced automation scenarios. I’d love to hear your thoughts or any tips you might have for enhancing the functionality or user experience.

Thanks for reading, and happy tinkering!

Best regards,
