Smart Pet Feeder Project: Seeking Ideas for Expansion

Hi everyone! I recently embarked on a fun project using my Particle Photon to create a WiFi-enabled pet treat dispenser. It’s been a great way to keep my pets entertained and automate their feeding schedule. Here’s what I’ve done so far:

  1. Hardware Setup: I used a Particle Photon, a micro servo motor, and a simple plastic container as the dispenser. The setup is straightforward and cost-effective, perfect for those looking to dip their toes into IoT projects.

  2. Control System: I integrated the device with SmartThings, allowing me to control it via my phone. It’s been a breeze to set up, and the community support has been invaluable.

  3. Current State: The dispenser works beautifully, but I’m eager to take it to the next level. I’m considering upgrading to a continuous rotation servo motor for smoother operation and exploring more durable materials for the enclosure.

  4. Camera Integration: I have a Foscam IP camera nearby, but unfortunately, there aren’t great integrations for the Particle Photon yet. I’d love to set up a system where I can monitor my pets in real-time and trigger the feeder remotely.

Questions for the Community:

  • Have any of you experimented with similar projects? What improvements or modifications would you recommend?
  • I’m considering purchasing an electric candy machine for a cleaner and more robust housing. Does anyone have experience with integrating such devices with Particle Photon?
  • How do you handle camera integrations with your IoT projects? Any tips or workarounds would be greatly appreciated!

I’m really excited to see where this project goes and can’t wait to hear your thoughts and suggestions! Let’s brainstorm together and make this pet feeder even smarter and more functional. :paw_prints::sparkles:
