Smart Plug Timer Functionality in Detached Garage

I recently encountered an issue with my smart plug timer functionality in my detached garage, and I wanted to share my experience and solution with the community. My garage is 160 feet away from the nearest WiFi access point, which has posed some connectivity challenges. I use the smart plug to turn off the charger for my mobility chair after 10 to 12 hours of charging, typically between 2 to 4 AM. However, due to wildlife concerns, I need to keep the garage door closed overnight, which weakens the WiFi signal required for the smart plug to function properly.

Initially, I thought the issue was with the smart plug itself, but after some research, I realized the problem was the reliance on a strong WiFi connection. The garage door being closed significantly reduced the signal strength, causing the timer to fail. I explored various solutions, including using a WiFi extender and adjusting the placement of the smart plug, but these didn’t provide a consistent fix.

After some trial and error, I discovered that setting the timer directly on the smart plug without relying on the app or WiFi connection was the key. Most smart plugs allow you to set a timer manually, which doesn’t require an active internet connection. This was a simple yet effective solution that eliminated my dependency on WiFi for this specific task.

This experience taught me the importance of understanding the limitations of smart devices and exploring manual settings as a backup option. It also highlighted the need for a more robust WiFi setup in areas with limited coverage. I hope this helps anyone else facing similar challenges with their smart plugs or devices in remote locations.

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to hearing about your experiences and solutions as well!
