I’ve been exploring how to integrate my smart devices to create a seamless nighttime routine. One thing I’ve noticed is that my bedroom lamps, powered by smart outlets, can be used not just as control points but also as sensors. By monitoring the power consumption, I can detect when the lamps are turned off, which would ideally trigger a series of actions like turning off other lights or adjusting the thermostat.
I’ve been using both Z-Wave and Zigbee outlets, and while they appear differently in the SmartThings app, both have metering capabilities. The challenge is figuring out how to translate the power readings into actionable states. I’ve heard about virtual switches that can change state based on power usage, but I’m not sure if such a feature exists out of the box. If not, I’d love to know how difficult it would be to create one.
Has anyone successfully set up something similar? I’d appreciate any tips or experiences to make this automation work smoothly. It would be great to have a system that’s both reliable and efficient, ensuring a peaceful night’s sleep without manual adjustments.
