After experiencing unexpected boiler behavior this winter, I embarked on a mission to create a smart monitoring system. My goal was to track the boiler’s runtime and ensure consistent heating performance. Here’s how I turned a ‘dumb’ steam boiler into a smart, monitored device.
Challenges Faced
- The boiler would run excessively, sometimes for over an hour, without maintaining the desired temperature.
- Traditional troubleshooting methods didn’t resolve the issue, leaving me concerned about heating reliability.
Solution Approach
I decided to leverage my IT background and DIY skills to implement a monitoring system. Here’s what I did:

- I chose a Zigbee motion, lux, temperature, and humidity sensor for its ability to detect heat and light changes accurately.
- Mounting the sensor near the boiler allowed me to capture temperature fluctuations and light indicators of boiler activity.

- Configured the sensor to trigger notifications when the boiler starts and stops.
- Set up temperature thresholds to monitor heating cycles and ensure even distribution across rooms.

Dashboard Integration
- Created a dedicated dashboard card to display boiler runtime and temperature trends.
- Used color-coded mini-graphs to visualize room temperatures, providing a quick overview of heating performance.
Results Achieved
- The boiler now runs efficiently, with consistent heating cycles.
