Smart Store Display Automation Success Story

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a fun and successful project I recently completed for my retail store. The goal was to automate the store’s display screen to turn off during peak sunlight hours to reduce glare and heat buildup. Let me walk through the journey!

Initially, I was using a Shelly Motion 2 sensor, but it’s no longer available. After some research, I settled on the Shelly BLU Motion sensor for its Bluetooth capabilities and ease of setup. The challenge was integrating it with the existing Philips Hue Sync Box and ioBroker system without adding another wireless protocol to the mix.

Here’s what I did:

  1. Direct Connection Attempt: I first tried connecting the Shelly BLU Motion directly to the Shelly Plus Plug S. Unfortunately, without the Shelly app, this wasn’t straightforward. The sensor and plug needed some configuration tweaks to communicate properly.

  2. ioBroker Integration: The next step was using ioBroker to handle the automation. I set up a rule where the sensor’s lux readings trigger the Shelly Plus Plug S to cut power to the display when sunlight exceeds a certain threshold. This approach worked seamlessly and allowed for more flexibility in adjusting the sensitivity.

  3. Bluetooth Gateway Setup: To ensure reliable communication, I positioned the Shelly Plus Plug S as a Bluetooth gateway near the display. This解决了之前信号范围的问题,确保传感器和插头始终同步。

  4. Testing and Fine-Tuning: I spent a week monitoring the system to ensure it wasn’t too sensitive during cloudy days or early mornings. Adjusting the lux threshold in ioBroker made all the difference!

The result? The display now automatically turns off during intense sunlight, protecting the screen and reducing heat inside the store. It’s been a game-changer for maintaining a comfortable shopping environment while saving on energy costs.

I’m really happy with how this project turned out. It’s a great example of how smart home technology can be adapted to solve real-world problems. If anyone has similar projects or questions, I’d love to hear about them!

Cheers,
