I recently faced a challenge with my trash container that I thought might be too trivial to solve, but with a bit of creativity, I managed to turn it into a smart solution. Let me share my experience in case it inspires others!
The Problem:
Every week, I have to move my trash container about 200 feet from my house to the curb for pickup. The issue is that I can’t see the container from my house, so I often end up leaving it out longer than necessary or bringing it back too early. This became especially frustrating when the trash collectors were inconsistent with their pickup times.
The Solution:
I decided to use a Sensative Door/Window Sensor to monitor the trash container. Here’s how I set it up:
-
Sensor Placement:
I mounted the sensor on the edge of the container and attached the magnet to the lid’s lip. This way, when the lid is closed, the sensor is protected from the elements. When the lid opens (indicating the trash has been collected), the sensor detects the change. -
Automation Setup:
I created a simple WebCore piston to monitor the sensor during the expected trash pickup hours. When the lid opens, the piston sends a text message to my phone, notifying me that the trash has been collected. -
Benefits:
This setup has been a game-changer for me. I no longer have to guess whether the trash has been picked up, and I can bring the container back as soon as it’s emptied. It’s a small automation, but it saves me time and frustration.
Why I Love This Solution:
This project shows how even the most mundane tasks can be enhanced with smart technology. It’s a great example of how creativity and simple tools can solve everyday problems. Plus, it’s a fun way to demonstrate the versatility of smart home devices!
