Hey everyone, I wanted to share a fun project I recently completed using Shelly devices to automate my washer and dryer! ![]()

I’ve been using Shelly products for a while now, and they’ve consistently impressed me with their reliability and ease of integration. Recently, I noticed that my washer and dryer were sharing a single outlet, which was causing wear and tear on the contacts. So, I decided to tackle this issue head-on.
Here’s what I did: I built a custom housing with two separate outlets, each connected to the main outlet. The goal was to automate the switching between the washer and dryer using Shelly devices. I ended up using a Shelly 1 to control the outlets, and it worked like a charm!
I set up the automation so that when I turn on the washer, it automatically switches to the correct outlet, and the same goes for the dryer. This not only extends the life of the outlets but also makes the process seamless. I even added some RGB lighting to indicate which appliance is currently active—super handy!
If you’re considering a similar setup, here are a few tips:
- Plan your hardware layout: Make sure the outlets are easily accessible and labeled clearly.
- Use the right Shelly device: The Shelly 1 was perfect for this project, but depending on your needs, other models might be more suitable.
- Test thoroughly: Before finalizing, test the automation multiple times to ensure everything works smoothly.
This project has been a great learning experience, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. It’s amazing how a little creativity and the right tools can transform everyday tasks into something smarter and more efficient. ![]()
