Hi everyone! I wanted to share a fun DIY project I recently completed to make my laundry routine a bit smarter. After setting up my dryer to notify me when it’s done, I decided to tackle the washer as well. Here’s how it went down!
The Dryer Setup
I started with my dryer, which was a relatively simple project. I added a buzzer to it since my buzzer was 110V. I used a relay and a Ring Door/Window Sensor to trigger an alert when the dryer cycle finished. This setup works seamlessly with Alexa, which announces “Dryer is Done” whenever the buzzer goes off. I mounted everything neatly inside the dryer, making sure it was accessible and inconspicuous. It’s been working like a charm for months now!
The Washer Challenge
Now, the washer has been a bit trickier. I ordered an Aeotec Smart Switch 6, a Z-Wave smart switch, hoping to replicate the success I had with the dryer. While the switch itself integrates smoothly with my SmartThings setup, I’m still figuring out how to get Alexa to announce when the washer is done. I’ve heard about WebCore, but I’m not quite ready to set up a server for that yet. If anyone has a workaround or a simpler solution, I’d love to hear it!
DIY Tips and Tricks
For anyone looking to embark on a similar project, here are a few tips:
- Plan Ahead: Sketch out your setup and make sure you have all the necessary components before diving in.
- Safety First: Always disconnect power before working on appliances.
- Keep It Neat: Mount components securely and route wires neatly to maintain a clean look.
I’m really proud of how this project turned out for the dryer, and I’m hopeful about solving the washer puzzle soon. It’s been a great way to integrate smart tech into my daily routine without breaking the bank. If anyone has experience with similar setups or suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
