I wanted to share a really exciting project I’ve been working on—helping my dad integrate smart home technology into his restaurant. It’s been a family business since the 60s, and while he loves the traditional ways, I thought adding some smart devices could make his life a bit easier.
I started with a SmartThings v2 hub since I’ve had great luck with it at home. The main goals were to monitor the walk-in fridge temperatures, ensure the sign is on when it should be, and maybe even automate some of the jukebox and video games. I picked up some temperature sensors, smart outlets, and a few smart bulbs to get started.
One challenge was figuring out the best way to set up the automation. I ended up using IFTTT to create routines that check the fridge temps and send alerts if they go out of range. I also set up a daily schedule to turn on the sign and some lights so he doesn’t have to worry about it.
The coolest part? I even managed to link the jukebox to a smart plug so it turns on at specific times. The employees love it because it adds a fun vibe to the place without any extra effort.
