SmartThings Hub Migration Challenges and Solutions

As a long-time SmartThings user, I recently faced a significant challenge during a house renovation. After contractors removed all the switches, I decided to start fresh with a new Samsung SmartThings Hub. However, I encountered several issues during the migration process that were quite frustrating.

Initially, I struggled with excluding all the old switches before moving the hub. Unfortunately, this oversight led to complications when trying to add devices back to the new hub. Despite following numerous help topics, I couldn’t get any switches to connect. The exclusion process seemed to work, as it showed ‘X devices deleted,’ but adding devices back was impossible.

After extensive research and trial and error, I discovered that resetting the hub and ensuring all devices were completely powered off before re-adding them made a significant difference. I also found that using the SmartThings app’s diagnostic tools helped identify compatibility issues with some older devices.

One key takeaway from this experience is the importance of thorough preparation. I now recommend creating a detailed inventory of all devices and their configurations before starting a migration. Additionally, testing each device individually after migration can help catch issues early.

This experience taught me the value of persistence and the importance of community support. If anyone else is facing similar challenges, I encourage you to share your experiences and solutions. Let’s help each other navigate the sometimes tricky world of smart home automation!

Happy hacking and here’s to smoother migrations in the future!
