Solving Video Playback Issues with Wyze Cameras

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a solution that worked wonders for me regarding video playback issues with my Wyze cameras. For a while, I was struggling with slow or unresponsive video streams, especially when accessing them remotely. It was quite frustrating, but I finally figured out the cause and a simple fix!

After some research and experimenting, I discovered that the issue was related to my router’s network settings. Wyze cameras operate on the 2.4 GHz band, but my router was set up to use both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. This dual-band setup was causing the cameras to connect intermittently, leading to poor video quality.

Here’s what I did to resolve it:

  1. Set Up a Guest Network: I created a dedicated guest network on my router, ensuring it only used the 2.4 GHz band. This was crucial because Wyze cameras don’t support the 5 GHz band.
  2. Configure Security Settings: I set the security protocol on this guest network to WPA & WPA2, which I believe is compatible with Wyze cameras.
  3. Reconnect Cameras: I reset each Wyze camera and connected them to the new guest network. This involved using the Wyze app to guide me through the process.
  4. Adjust Phone Settings: To prevent my phone from automatically connecting to the guest network, I updated the network settings on my iPhone to avoid joining the guest network unless I specifically connect.

The result? Perfect video playback! Whether I’m at home or abroad, the streams are smooth and reliable. I even tested adding a new camera, and it worked seamlessly once connected to the guest network.

This fix was a game-changer for me, saving me from the hassle of upgrading my routers or replacing my cameras. If anyone else is experiencing similar issues, I highly recommend trying this solution. It’s a straightforward tweak that makes a huge difference!

Happy smart home tinkering everyone!
