Don’t try and do everything. Start out with Smart Bulbs and Movement Sensors. These will allow you to practice automations and see the results quickly, such as energy usage or what happens when a time is reached or movement is detected. Also don’t be afraid to mix eco systems to practice automations that involve span these eco systems.

Good advice. I think this starts with knowing what problems you want to solve.
Experimentation is fine (and fun), but without purpose could lead to a collection of gadgets rather than an integrated experience.
