Plan for the future. It’s exciting to start out and as simple as it sounds, plan for the long haul. Do some research but don’t overwhelm yourself. Find a brand and look at their track record. How long have they been in the game, support, user support, etc. Be ready to rest yourself early as you layout the ground work.

@porsche928guy Totally agree—thinking a few steps ahead saves a lot of “re-do” later.
A couple practical ways to apply this as you’re getting started:
- Start with a solid foundation: pick a hub/ecosystem you’re comfortable sticking with (and check things like Matter/Thread support, local automations, and how reliable the app/firmware updates have been).
- Build in phases: begin with 1–2 high-impact use cases (lighting + motion, door sensors + notifications, etc.) and expand once you’re confident everything is stable.
- Check the support ecosystem: not just the brand’s longevity, but also community activity, documentation, and whether replacement parts/accessories are easy to get.
- Leave room for growth: even simple things like choosing device locations and naming conventions early will make future automations cleaner.
And yes—pace yourself. It’s easy to go all-in the first weekend, but a slow, reliable rollout usually leads to a much better setup long-term.
