Streamlining Smart Lighting with Dual-Button Switches: A User's Journey

I’ve been diving into the world of smart lighting lately, and I must say, it’s been an enlightening experience! :rocket: One of the challenges I’ve encountered is integrating a smart switch that seamlessly works with my existing setup. Let me share my journey and some insights I’ve gained along the way.

I currently use Sengled Color bulbs in my master bedroom, which are perfectly compatible with Google Voice Control via SmartThings. However, the lack of a physical switch control has been a minor annoyance. After some research, I decided to try the Zooz Zen21 switch, hoping it would bridge the gap between traditional and smart controls.

The installation went smoothly—I wired both the line and load wires to the line side and set up an automation in SmartThings. This setup successfully turned the lights to white at 80% brightness when the switch was toggled. While this solved part of the problem, it introduced a new challenge: voice control interference. If someone used voice commands to change the light status, the switch would no longer function as intended, requiring an extra step to reset it before controlling the lights again.

I reached out to Zooz for support, and they suggested creating a rule to sync the switch status with the lights. However, this solution had an unintended side effect—any voice command changing the light color would reset it to white at 80% brightness. This was frustrating, especially since we use red lighting every evening for ambiance.

After some brainstorming, I realized the issue stemmed from the switch’s inability to distinguish between on and off commands independently. I started exploring the possibility of a switch that functions as two separate buttons (on and off) without altering the switch’s appearance. This way, the on/off commands would be sent regardless of the previous state, eliminating the sync issue.

While I haven’t found a perfect solution yet, this journey has taught me the importance of thorough research and community support. If anyone has recommendations or alternative approaches, I’d love to hear them! Let’s continue to innovate and improve our smart home experiences together. :star2:
