Successful Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan Installation and SmartThings Integration

I recently embarked on a project to install two Hampton Bay Ceiling Fans, but the experience wasn’t without its challenges. Initially, I encountered difficulties due to the Zigbee controllers being out of stock, which meant the fans were operating as ‘dumb’ fans for a while. However, after setting up a watch on the Hampton Bay Universal Fan Control, I was finally able to get my hands on the product and begin the installation process.

The installation itself was mostly smooth, though the instructions could have been more detailed. I carefully disconnected the wire nuts, ensuring the fan, light, and house hot wires were properly aligned. The control unit was mounted neatly between the downrod and outlet box, and I made sure to leave the grounding wires untouched as they weren’t needed. The wiring process was methodical, with the fan wires connected to one side of the control unit and the house wires to the other. Color matching was a breeze since the fans were also Hampton Bay products.

One minor hiccup was the house neutral wire being black, which I connected to a red wire on the control box. Despite this, everything functioned as expected. The control unit was securely fastened, and I used switch guards and command strips to attach the remotes next to the wall switches, redirecting my instinct to flip the switches to using the remotes instead.

Setting up the SmartThings integration was another hurdle. I had to navigate through forums to find the right information and import the necessary device handlers from a GitHub repository. Initially, I faced issues with pasting the code directly, but publishing it resolved the problem. The devices were eventually recognized as ‘KOF Zigbee Fan Controllers,’ and everything fell into place.

The final result has been nothing short of rewarding. The fans operate seamlessly, and the integration with SmartThings has added a new layer of convenience to my home. I’m particularly pleased with the ability to adjust the fan speed and light intensity using the remote controls and the SmartThings app. This project not only enhanced my home’s functionality but also deepened my understanding of integrating smart devices into a cohesive system.

For anyone considering a similar project, I highly recommend thorough planning and patience, especially when dealing with wiring and device handlers. The end result is well worth the effort!
