Successful Integration of Mitsubishi Heat Pump with ESPEasy

I recently took on the challenge of integrating my Mitsubishi Heat Pump into my existing smart home setup, and I wanted to share my experience and some tips for anyone else looking to do the same. After researching various methods, I decided to go with ESPEasy, a platform I’ve used before for other sensors and found incredibly user-friendly for setup, OTA updates, and more.

The process involved using the excellent library from SwiCago, which provided a solid foundation but required some tweaking to fit my specific needs. I spent a bit of time adjusting the settings within ESPEasy, such as selecting the correct serial port and configuring the plugin to send MQTT messages every 60 seconds. This ensures that any changes made via the IR remote are immediately reflected in my system.

One of the most rewarding parts was seeing everything come together seamlessly. Now, controlling the AC is as simple as sending commands to the designated MQTT topic. For example, adjusting the temperature or changing the mode is just a matter of publishing the right payload. I’ve also set up my openHAB configuration to handle these commands, making it fully integrated into my smart home ecosystem.

I’d like to highlight a few key takeaways for anyone considering this setup:

  • Research First: Look into existing integrations and libraries to save time. The SwiCago library was a lifesaver for me.
  • ESPEasy Flexibility: Don’t underestimate how much this platform can do. It’s incredibly versatile and supports a wide range of devices and protocols.
  • MQTT Configuration: Spend the time to properly set up your MQTT topics and payloads. This ensures smooth communication between your devices and your smart home system.
  • Testing: Before fully committing, test each component individually to catch any issues early on.

I’m really happy with how this project turned out. It’s not only enhanced my home comfort but also added another layer of automation to my daily routine. If you’re looking to integrate legacy HVAC systems into your smart home, I highly recommend exploring this approach. It’s a bit of a learning curve, but the payoff is well worth it!

If anyone has questions or needs help with their own setup, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to share more details or troubleshoot any issues you might encounter.
