Successful Integration of Vera with ASUS Router: A Smart Home Journey

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share my recent experience integrating Vera into my ASUS WL-500g router. While it was a bit of a challenge, the result has been fantastic, and I thought I’d document my journey in case anyone else is considering a similar setup.

First, I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of repurposing older hardware for smart home use. The ASUS WL-500g router, though a bit outdated, seemed like a perfect candidate. Flashing Vera onto it wasn’t something I’d done before, but with a bit of research and some trial and error, I managed to get it up and running.

The process involved downloading the Vera firmware and using a custom script to flash it onto the router. It wasn’t without its hurdles—there were a few moments where I thought I might have bricked the device, but thankfully, the community forums were a lifesaver. Tips from experienced users helped me troubleshoot and get everything working smoothly.

Now that Vera is up and running, I’ve been able to integrate it seamlessly with my existing smart devices. The ability to control everything from a single interface has been a game-changer. I’ve set up routines that automate lighting, temperature, and even my security cameras, making my home not just smarter but also more convenient.

One of the most satisfying aspects has been how Vera has enhanced my home security. With the integration of motion sensors and cameras, I feel much more at ease knowing my home is well-protected. Plus, the energy-saving features have already started paying off, which is a nice bonus.

I’d like to extend a huge thank you to the community for all the support and resources available. Without the collective knowledge shared here, I wouldn’t have been able to pull this off. It’s truly inspiring to see how a group of enthusiasts can make such a positive impact on each other’s projects.

If anyone else is looking to repurpose old hardware or is interested in Vera, I’d highly recommend giving it a try. The learning curve is worth it, and the end result is a system that’s both powerful and customizable.

Happy tinkering!

Best regards,
