Successful Shelly Integration with OpenHAB for Smart Curtains

I’ve recently embarked on a project to integrate my Shelly devices with OpenHAB, and I’m thrilled to share my success story! :tada:

My Goal:
I wanted to automate my smart curtains using a Shelly 2.5 and OpenHAB. The idea was to have the curtains open automatically in the morning and close at night, enhancing my daily routine without any manual intervention.

The Setup:

  1. Hardware: I used a Shelly 2.5 to control the motorized curtains. The setup involved connecting the Shelly to the curtain motor and ensuring proper power supply.
  2. OpenHAB Configuration: I installed the Shelly binding in OpenHAB and configured it to communicate with my Shelly 2.5. This involved setting up the device in the Things section and creating the necessary channels.
  3. Automation Rules: I created a rule in OpenHAB to trigger the curtains to open at 7:00 AM and close at 9:00 PM. I also added a manual override using a scene in the UI for days when I wanted to adjust the schedule.

Challenges and Solutions:

  • Initial Configuration Hiccups: I faced some issues with the Shelly binding not recognizing the device. After some research, I realized I needed to update the binding to the latest version, which resolved the problem.
  • Timing Adjustments: The curtains didn’t open or close at the exact times initially. I adjusted the automation rule to account for the motor’s speed and ensure smooth operation.

Results:
This integration has been a game-changer! The curtains now open and close precisely as scheduled, making my mornings brighter and evenings more relaxed. It’s amazing how a simple automation can enhance daily life so much!

Tips for Others:

  • Start Small: Begin with a single device to understand the integration process before expanding.
  • Check Logs: OpenHAB’s logs are invaluable for troubleshooting. They helped me identify and fix issues quickly.
  • Community Support: Don’t hesitate to ask for help in forums. The OpenHAB and Shelly communities are incredibly supportive and knowledgeable.

I’m excited to explore more automation possibilities with my Shelly devices and OpenHAB! :rocket: If anyone has similar projects or questions, feel free to reach out. Happy automating! :sparkles:
