I’ve been using Hubitat for about a year now, and while I’ve managed to set up a lot of my devices, there was one thing that always eluded me—automatically locking my garage service door and shed door after 30 minutes of unlocking. I’ve recently moved over my Kwikset Dead Bolt locks from Wink, and this was the last piece of the puzzle for me.
Initially, I found the Rule Machine quite daunting. I’ve set up a dozen or so other rules for notifications and basic automation tasks, and they were relatively straightforward. But this one had me scratching my head for days. I kept second-guessing myself, thinking there must be something I was missing.
After some trial and error, I realized the key was to simplify the conditions. I was overcomplicating things by trying to incorporate too many variables. All I really wanted was a basic timer that would lock the doors after a set period, regardless of other factors like presence or door contacts.
Here’s what worked for me: I created a new rule with a time trigger set to 30 minutes after the door was unlocked. I made sure to disable any additional conditions to keep it as straightforward as possible. Once the timer hits 30 minutes, the rule triggers the lock command.
It’s such a small thing, but it’s made a big difference in my daily routine. No more manually locking the doors—Hubitat handles it seamlessly. I’m feeling more confident now about tackling other automation projects around the house. If anyone else is struggling with similar rules, don’t hesitate to reach out—I’d be happy to help!
