Hey everyone! I wanted to share my recent success in automating the color changes of my Tasmota-controlled LED light strip. It’s been a bit of a journey, but I finally got it working smoothly, and I’d love to walk through my experience in case it helps anyone else out there.
The Challenge:
I’ve had my Tasmota LED strip for a while now, and while I could manually change the colors through the Lovelace interface, I really wanted to set up some automations. The issue I kept running into was that the only options available for automation were on/off, brightness, and state changes—nothing for color. It was pretty frustrating because I knew the hardware was capable of more!
The Solution:
After some digging through forums and documentation, I discovered that I needed to use a specific add-on or plugin to enable color control within automations. It turned out I had installed the right plugin way back when, but I hadn’t configured it properly. Once I revisited my Lovelace card setup, I realized I needed to adjust the entity configuration to include color parameters explicitly.
The Setup:
Here’s a quick breakdown of what I did:
- Identify the Right Plugin: I confirmed that I had the
custom:rgb-light-cardadd-on installed. If you haven’t installed this yet, I highly recommend it for more granular control over RGB lights. - Configure Lovelace Cards: I edited my existing Lovelace cards to include detailed color configurations. This involved specifying RGB values, brightness levels, and transition times for each preset color I wanted to use.
- Create Automations: Using the newly configured cards, I set up automations that trigger based on time, presence, or even specific events (like when I start a movie). Each automation now seamlessly changes the LED colors without any hiccups.
The Result:
It’s been a game-changer for my home setup! Now, my living room lights automatically shift to a warm amber hue in the evenings, switch to a vibrant blue during movie nights, and even cycle through colors for festive occasions. The best part is that everything happens hands-off, which was my main goal.
Tips for Others:
- Double-Check Plugin Installations: Make sure you have the right plugins installed for extended functionality.
- Review Lovelace Configurations: Sometimes the solution is as simple as tweaking your existing setup.
- Experiment with Presets: Don’t be afraid to create multiple color presets to suit different moods or events.
I hope this helps someone else out there looking to take their LED automation to the next level! If anyone has questions or needs advice, feel free to reach out. Happy automating! ![]()
