Hello everyone!
I’ve been exploring the world of smart home automation lately and wanted to share my journey with you. One thing I’ve been really curious about is setting up an automation that turns on my living room lights when the TV is on. It sounds simple, but I ran into a few hurdles along the way.
First, I connected my TV to a smart plug and set up my Hue bulbs. I thought it would be straightforward—just detect when the TV is on and turn the lights on automatically. But when I tested my setup, it didn’t work as expected. The lights would sometimes turn on when they shouldn’t, or not at all when I wanted them to.
After some research, I realized the issue was with how I was monitoring the TV’s power consumption. I was using a basic rule that checked the current consumption, but it wasn’t accurate enough. I decided to try a different approach by using a scene-based automation. Instead of relying solely on power consumption, I combined it with motion sensors to ensure the lights only turned on when someone was in the room.
The result? It’s been working perfectly! Now, when I sit down to watch my favorite show, the lights automatically adjust to a comfortable brightness, creating the perfect ambiance. Plus, I added a feature where the lights dim after 30 minutes of inactivity, saving energy without interrupting my viewing experience.
I’d love to hear how others have set up their entertainment area automations. Have you found any tips or tricks that make your setup even better? Let’s share and learn together! ![]()
